Josh Turner Appearing at CMA Songwriters Series in NYC

Josh Turner will be the special guest when the CMA Song-
writers Series returns to Joe’s Pub in New York City on
Sept. 9. The series is similar to the intimate singer-
songwriter performances that take place daily at small
venues in Nashville. Songwriter Bob DiPiero, whose
credits include George Strait’s “Blue Clear Sky,” will
host the event taking place the night before the final

                Kid Rock Offers Views
      on Music Industry, Politics … and Oprah

Kid RockEditor’s note: More of the Kid Rock interview
is featured on the new episode of CMT Insider premier-
ing Saturday (Aug. 23) at 1:30 p.m. ET/PT.

At a time when record companies are continuing to be-
moan the decline of CD sales, Kid Rock observes, “If
people had good albums, they’d be buying albums. But
people are buying singles because they only have good
songs.”

As evidenced by his latest album, Rock N Roll Jesus,
it’s clear he’s not having a problem sustaining his
success at retail. Still in the Top 10 of the all-
genre Billboard 200 chart, the title has sold more
than 1.6 million copies and is currently selling
more than 100,000 copies per week after being re-
leased almost a year ago. He’s also enjoying a major
country hit with “All Summer Long.”

In an interview with CMT Insider, Kid Rock said the
music industry is failing in its efforts to create
superstar acts.

“The program director at a radio station, by the way,
is not the superstar,” he said. “If he was a superstar,
he’d be out creating songs, but he’s not. But he wants
to act like he has control and power.”

During his visit to CMT’s offices earlier this week,
Kid Rock offered his opinions on a variety of topics,
including the concept of keeping his thoughts to him-
self when it comes to politics.

“I truly believe that people like myself, who are in
a position of entertainers in the limelight, should
keep their mouth shut on politics,” he noted. “Because
at the end of the day, let me tell you what I ‘m good
at: I’m good at writing songs and singing. What I’m
not educated in is the field of political science. And
so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people
of who I think they should be voting for … I think
would be very irresponsible on my part. So I’ll just
keep my mouth shut on that.”

He further suggests that political candidates might be
better off to avoid close connections to those in the
entertainment business.

“I think celebrity endorsements hurt politicians,” he
said. “Because as soon as somebody comes out for a
politician, especially in Hollywood, when they all go,
‘I’m voting for this guy!’ — I go, ‘That’s not who
I’m voting for!’ … As soon as Oprah Winfrey pops up
and goes ‘Ha-la-la-la-la,’ I’m like, ‘I love Barrack
Obama. I hate Oprah Winfrey.’” He adds, “I don’t hate
her. I just don’t believe in her, so I don’t want any
part of any of that. I think celebrities hurt
politicians.”

As a celebrity who has gotten plenty of media attention
– both good and bad — Kid Rock also had some words to
say about the proliferation of Internet blogs.

“There’s a real problem with this Internet thing and
everyone thinking they have a voice,” he said. “This
is where freedom can get out of hand. Everybody
should not have a voice is what we’ve just proven by
the Internet. Because I’m convinced that Jesus Christ
could come back onto this earth and forgive everybody’s
sins, and it’d be the greatest day in mankind ever.
Somebody would take a picture of him. They’d put him
on a Web site like TMZ, and the first comment would be
‘Jesus is a douche bag.’ You know what I’m sayin’?

  Sells More Than 500,000 Concert Tickets in 2008

Brad Paisley will surpass 500,000 tickets sold this
year, with his concert in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday
night (Aug. 22). So far, Paisley has made 56 stops in
2008 during his Bonfires and Amplifiers tour and his
current Paisley Party tour. “This number means more
to me this year than ever knowing how strapped people
are economically these days,” says Paisley. “The fact
that fans are willing to both buy tickets and the
gasoline necessary to come to a show is the ultimate
compliment and I am so thankful.” Paisley will also
tour in early 2009, with details to be announced
soon.

to Be Added to Hallmark Line

Tim McGrawTim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and a dozen or so
other country artists are reaching new fans through
“sound cards” designed, licensed and distributed by the
Hallmark greeting card company.

Each card carries a 30-second snippet from one of the
participating artist’s hit records, along with a Hallmark-
composed greeting that matches the song’s theme. The names
 of the song’s writers and publishers are listed on the
backs of the cards.

The “Use Tim McGraw” and “Use Rascal Flatts” lines are
racked in displays that hold six different cards and
envelopes. A photo of the artist tops each display but
does not appear on the cards.

Under the McGraw banner are four cards for birthdays
that contain sound clips from “Down on the Farm” (two
designs), “Live Like You Were Dying” and “My Next Thirty
Years.” The remaining two are categorized as “Love” cards
and feature clips from “Just to See You Smile” and “I
Like It, I Love It.”

For Rascal Flatts, “Mayberry,” “Fast Cars and Freedom”
and “Here’s to You” are the birthday clips, while “Love
You Out Loud,” “Thanks for Being You” and “Shine On”
constitute the “Love” messages.

“We have hundreds of songs, television shows and movie
clips licensed,” according to Deidre Parkes, a spokes-
person for Hallmark, who added that other country
artists with sound cards already in stores or on the
way include Alan Jackson, Faith Hill, Willie Nelson,
Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Martina McBride, Billy Ray
Cyrus, George Strait and Vince Gill. The cards are
available in Hallmark outlets and drugstores nationwide,
she said.

Because a single card requires separate licenses for
the recorded sound, each of the music publishers and,
in some cases, the artist’s image, Parkes said Hallmark
delegates the complex task of licensing to Corbis, a
Seattle-based company specializing in this service.

               Producer Jerry Wexler Dies,
             Signed Willie Nelson in the ’70s

Famed music executive and record producer Jerry Wexler
died at home in Sarasota, Fla. on Aug. 15, of congenital
heart failure. He was 91. Wexler was best known for help-
ing pioneer the Atlantic Records label, home to such
artists as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and other R&B
greats. Wexler was also responsible for signing Willie
Nelson to the label in the 1970s, yielding the acclaimed
Nelson albums Phases & Stages and Shotgun Willie. Wexler
also opened a Nashville office for Atlantic’s country
music division in 1974. He left the label the following
year and worked as a freelancer, producing albums by such
artists as Bob Dylan, Dire Straits and Carlos Santana.

 Waylon Jennings’ Final Recordings Slated for Oct. 21

The late Waylon Jennings’ final recordings will be re-
leased on Oct. 21 on Vagrant Records, backed by son
Shooter Jennings and his band, the .357s. Waylon
approached Shooter about making the album in 1995, but
the final recording sessions took place in 2006 after
Shooter moved the original tapes to ProTools. “The
tracks I originally made were a little young and messy,
but they were still really wild,” the younger Jennings
says. “Now I feel like I’ve been given the chance to
take my years of experience and match them to his.” The
project’s eight songs include “Ain’t Livin’ Long Like
This,” “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean,” “Waymore’s Blues”
and “Are You Ready for the Country?” Waylon Jennings
died in 2002.

       Kenny Chesney Trained With New Orleans Saints

Thanks to Kenny Chesney, the New Orleans Saints were
given a day off from their training camp in Jackson,

join the Saints during practice for a second year. Be-
fore Chesney suited up and hit the field, coach Sean
Payton told the players he would cancel Sunday’s
(Aug. 17) practice if Chesney caught a punt. On his

punter Steve Weatherford. “I quit growing too young
to ever think about getting to have a shot at playing
even in college, so this is about the most fun I can
have,” Chesney said. “It’s like having a lot of these

feel what it’s like to do it is the greatest feeling

   After Three-Year Delay, Keith Anderson Bows New Album

Keith AndersonKeith Anderson’s patience is finally paying
off.

Anderson admits he was frustrated last year when, just
after finishing his second album for Arista Records, he
was told he was going to have to switch labels. While
still within the Sony BMG family, the transfer meant it
would be another year before his album could be released
– an excruciatingly long delay for any artist, but
particularly wrenching for Anderson, whose previous
album had sold half a million copies and helped build a
sizable fan base he wanted to maintain.

But the wait was worth it. “I Still Miss You,” the first
single from his new album, C’mon!, is his highest-chart-
ing song to date — and it’s still climbing. Moreover,
the anticipation fueled by a three-year wait for new
Keith Anderson music has whipped up great expectations
for C’mon! (His earlier album, Three Chord Country and
American Rock & Roll was released in May 2005.)

Here was the problem: At Arista, Anderson found himself
competing for attention with fellow male vocalists Alan
Jackson and Brad Paisley, as well as with superstars
Brooks & Dunn and Carrie Underwood.

That being the situation, Joe Galante, head of Sony
BMG Records, Arista’s corporate parent, decided
Anderson stood a better chance of gaining the spot-
light if he moved over to Columbia, another Sony BMG
label. Its roster included Gretchen Wilson, Miranda
Lambert and Montgomery Gentry — but no other prom-
inent male artist.

“It freaked me out to switch,” Anderson recalls,
“because I’d had so much success on Arista. There
are such good friends over there and a great pro-
motional staff. My first record had gone gold, and
I’d had three big [single] hits.” Nonetheless, he
bowed to Galante’s strategy and proved himself to
Columbia by going on a six-month tour of radio
stations to ballyhoo the new album and single.

At the same time, Anderson continued to work the
road to keep fan interest up. “Oh, gosh, it was
just tour, tour, tour,” he says. “We were constantly
playing dates. We started playing all the new music,
too. So fans were getting a taste of it even before
the album came out.”

Among the songs getting the best responses, Anderson
reports, were “Sunday Morning in America,” “Somebody
Needs a Hug” (a strong candidate for second single),
“C’mon!” and “Break My Heart.”

“We don’t play many of the ballads,” Anderson says,
“because the show is such a live rockin’ show.”

Like its predecessor, C’mon! showcases Anderson’s
writing. He had a hand in writing every one of the
11 songs except for the catchy Foster & Lloyd
rhapsody, “Crazy Over You.” (Foster & Lloyd sang
along with Anderson on this cut.) His co-writers
were Jeffrey Steele (who also produced the album),
Rivers Rutherford, Bob DiPiero, David Lee Murphy,
Chuck Cannon, Tim Nichols, Jason Sellers, Vicky
McGehee, Chris Wallin, Rodney Clawson, John Rich
and Bobby Pinson.

Although it had already been a No. 1 single for Big
& Rich, Anderson decided to include “Lost in This
Moment” in his album. He says the song has been
around for a long time. “[Co-writer] John Rich and
I pitched it to a lot of other artists since neither
one of us had a record deal at the time [we wrote it],”
he explains. “And then — seven years later — we both
recorded it, not knowing that the other one had. …
Once it became a hit, we thought, gosh, we’ve already
spent time and money on my recording. Let’s put it on
the record and give everybody another taste of it.”

       Brad Paisley Gets Ready for Election Day Play

Brad Paisley’s new album, Play, will be released on
Nov. 4, the day of the U.S. presidential election.
Described as “an all-out guitar celebration,” the 15-
track album includes four songs that feature vocals.
Among them are Paisley’s collaborations with B.B. King
(on “Let the Good Times Roll”) and Keith Urban (”Start
a Band”). Paisley and Steve Wariner collaborated on
writing and singing “More Than Just This Song,” a
tribute to their early guitar heroes. Paisley salutes
one of his mentors, the late Buck Owens, by adding his
vocals and guitars to “Come On In.” Owens wrote the
song and recorded it, but the track had remained un-
finished. The 11 instrumental tracks include “Cluster
Pluck,” a jam featuring James Burton, Vince Gill, John
Jorgensen, Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert and
Wariner.
